D. Daniel Vujic

FLAGLINE

Q. When did you start writing.

A. I guess I’ve been writing stories since I was 9 or 10, but professionally, the first time I got paid was 1997.

Q. It appears you favor females for your main characters, is there any particular reason for this.

A. Yes, male characters are somewhat overdone and the complexities of female characters are much more fascinating to explore.

Q. It’s been sometimes said that your work features a considerable amount of sex. Why is that.

A. I don’t think that's really true, although I'll admit I write the sex quite graphically and descriptive.

Q. What software do you use for writing.

A. For screenplays I tend to use Final Draft the most but I'll use Movie Magic and Sophocles too. For novels I like Write it Now 2 and New Novelist but in the end the novels are converted to Microsoft Word and that is where I do the final edit.

Q. Do you have trouble, like many writers to start a story off.

A. No, not all. Actually, I usually encounter trouble on the last few pages.

Q. When you write do you listen to music and what kind.

A. I mostly write without music so that I can hear myself think and talk.

Q. . Do you work on more than one project at the same time.

A. Yes, all the time.

Q. In much of your recent work you write both a novel and screenplay based on the same story, why is that.

A. I got the idea from screenwriter and author William Goldman. The novels are sure to sell years before the screenplays do.

Q. Are you Serbian Canadian or American.

A. I am a duel Serbian and Canadian citizen, although I am proud to consider Florida my home too

Q. Where have you had the most success, in Serbia or North America.

A. Serbia and the former Yugoslavia, although greater success is slowly starting to happen in the United States and elsewhere in the world.

Q. Who are your three favorite novelists and screenwriters.

A. I admire Joe Eszterhas and David Mamet a great deal, and of course William Goldman. As for novelists, Dean Koontz and John Grisham, and again William Goldman.

Q. What are your three favorite novels and movies.

A. John Grisham's Street Lawyer, Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code and Dean Koontz's Hideaway. For movies it's hard to pick just three, shall we say Raiders of the Lost Ark, Basic Instinct and a three way draw between The Usual Suspects, the Serbian film Profesionalac and David Mamet and Brian De Palma's The Untouchables.

Q. Who are your three favorite actresses and actors.

A. I think Charlize Theron is fantastic, so is Julianne Moore and Angelina Jolie. I can never get tired of Harrison Ford and Bruce Willis and the late Charles Bronson has always been a favorite of mine.

Q. Who are your three favorite directors.

A. John Carpenter, Brian De Palma and of course Steven Spielberg.

Q. If you could pick a screenplay or book that you would have liked to have written, what would it have been and why.

A. I think it would be the book Schindler's List by author Thomas Keneally and the screenplay version of the same story by screenwriter Steven Zaillian. I feel it was important to tell that story.

Q. What made you want to be a writer.

A. I read author S.E. Hinton's book the "Outsiders" when I was twelve and immediately wanted to write books. I was sixteen when the movie version of the "Outsiders" came out and then wanted to write screenplays. Since than I never stopped.

A. Dragan. My full name is Dragan Daniel Vujic.

Q. Do you ever go by the name Dragan.

A. Certainly. I’ve used both names in various work and still do, but I’m commonly known as Dan.
